OVERVIEW

Sotheby’s auction house approached me to create a huge icon system for their new app for worldwide bidding. This set was a massive undertaking of over 400 icons in 2 sizes and 2 style, both line and solid.

EXPLORATION

I spent a few days working on some style explorations, hoping to achieve the right style and feel for Sotheby’s well known reputation. I knew we’d be looking at a few sizes so I wanted to explore less detailed versions of each icon to show how the glyph would scale.

GUIDELINES

After finding a style that both myself and the client felt worked with the Sotheby’s clean, reputable brand I began building a set of guidelines that I could apply to the full set. This would help keep the system consistent and provide some rules for any future development on the icon set.

40PX BASE SET

Next up, I needed to dive into the complete 40px icon set which was the largest set I was building at this stage. I worked on a few 20px icons at this time too, just to make sure the level of detail and consistency was balanced throughout.

20PX SET

Next up I dived into the 20px set, taking a little detail away whilst still keeping the overall message of the icon which can be quite a task. I adjusted the guidelines slightly for this set, mainly corner radius and spacing gap between each line but apart from that, the guides still very much informed this set.

20PX SOLID SET

A fair amount of the 20px line set needed to be converted to solid icons for different action states and darker background use.
